Application Process

HOW TO GUIDE: Auctioneer 
Applicant must complete an NC Approved Auctioneering School or complete the two-year apprenticeship program prior to applying for an auctioneer licensee and being allowed to take the North Carolina Auctioneer State Examination. Please see N.C.G.S. 85B-4 and 21 NCAC 04B.

The application must be properly completed, signed, notarized, accompanied by all required documents, proper fees, and dated no more than thirty (30) days prior to when your application is received by the office of the North Carolina Auctioneer Licensing Board (NCALB). It must be received, not postmarked, in the NCALB Office on, or before the examination deadline established by the Board. All fees may be combined in one check made payable to the North Carolina Auctioneer Licensing Board (NCALB). The correct fees must be submitted. Please note that it is a violation of 21 NCAC 4B .0404 to submit a check to the Board in payment of required fees, which is returned unpaid. 

After you Apply:

  • Board staff reviews the application.
  • Applicant will be notified by email concerning any deficiencies. 
  • Board staff will email examination confirmation.
  • Examination Result Letter is emailed within one week after taking the examination.
  • Applicant passes the examination; the application will be presented at a subsequent board meeting for review. If applicant fails, he/she is automatically scheduled for the next exam. Examination confirmation notice will be emailed with that information. 

The license will be issued within one week upon approval and mailed.
Please note that if the FBI/SBI Criminal History Research Results Report has not been received, the license will not be issued until the results have been received and there are no undisclosed matters.

HOW TO GUIDE: Apprentice Auctioneer
Applicant submits an apprentice license application. HOW TO GUIDE: Firms
The applicant on the auction firm application must be the owner, if the business is a sole proprietorship; a partner, if a partnership; an officer of the corporation, if incorporated; or a member manager, if a limited liability company. Type or print legibly in ink and mail the competed application to the Board office. Application may not be submitted by email or fax. If applying for an Auction Firm License with a non-auctioneer as a designated person, a firm exam is required pursuant to N.C.G.S. 85B-4(g).

After you Apply:

  • Board staff reviews the auction firm application.
  • Applicant will be notified by email concerning any deficiencies.
  •  A Designated Person (DP) of a firm who is an active NC Auctioneer, is not required to take the auction firm examination.
  • A firm exam is only for Non-Auctioneer Designated Person(s).
  • Board staff will contact the DP, by email, if a firm examination is required with specific examination information. Firm Examinations are scheduled on Mondays or Thursdays at 1:30 pm if no conflicts.
  •  Examination Result Letter is emailed within one week after taking the examination. If he/she fails, the applicant may retake the firm examination one time. 
  • The firm application will be present at a subsequent board meeting for review if DP passes the firm examination, if applicable.
  • The license will be issued within one week upon approval and mailed.
